{"id":8619,"date":"2024-12-30T21:12:50","date_gmt":"2024-12-30T21:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sandbox2.foxtrotdev.com\/?p=8619"},"modified":"2024-12-30T21:12:51","modified_gmt":"2024-12-30T21:12:51","slug":"remembering-john-parascandola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sandbox2.foxtrotdev.com\/?p=8619","title":{"rendered":"Remembering John Parascandola"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"235\" height=\"228\" src=\"https:\/\/sandbox2.foxtrotdev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Parascandolapic.jpg\" alt=\"Pharmacy in History Editorial Board Member John Parascandola\" class=\"wp-image-2392\" style=\"width:391px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sandbox2.foxtrotdev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Parascandolapic.jpg 235w, https:\/\/sandbox2.foxtrotdev.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Parascandolapic-150x146.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is with great sadness that the Institute acknowledges the death of John Parascandola (1941-2024).\u00a0 For more than a half century, John contributed his time, expertise, and enthusiasm to the field of the history of pharmacy.\u00a0 Soon after receiving his PhD in the History of Science in 1968, John joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy, teaming with Prof. Glenn Sonnedecker to teach the history of pharmacy.\u00a0 From 1973 to 1981, John led AIHP as Executive Director.\u00a0 After his departure in 1983 for Washington, DC, to head the History of Medicine Division of the National Library of Medicine, John remained active in Institute affairs.\u00a0 Most notably, John served as the chief elected officer of the Institute (Council Chair and President) from 1989 to 2007.\u00a0 After stepping aside in that role, he continued to support the field through service on numerous committees and by acting as an expert reviewer of books and submitted papers.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a scholar, John published widely on the history of pharmacology and public health.&nbsp; After retiring as Historian of the U.S. Public Health Service in 2004, John wrote extensively, including the books <em>Sex, Sin and Science: A History of Syphilis in America&nbsp;<\/em>and&nbsp;<em>King of Poisons: A History of Arsenic.&nbsp; <\/em>His most recent work &#8212; <em>A History of the Development of Alternatives to Animals in Research and Testing<\/em> \u2013 was published shortly before his death. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To read more about John Parascandola, visit his obituary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interfaithfunerals.com\/obituaries\/john-parascandola\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is with great sadness that the Institute acknowledges the death of John Parascandola (1941-2024).\u00a0 For more than a half century, John contributed his time, expertise, and enthusiasm to the field of the history of pharmacy.\u00a0 Soon after receiving his PhD in the History of Science in 1968, John joined the faculty at the University [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8619","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
