The program offers grants up to $2,000 to cover research expenses not normally covered by the student\u2019s university. Recipients of the grant must provide a report to AIHP on the research within one year after receiving the grant money. Grant recipients must also agree to submit a paper based on their thesis project or dissertation for consideration for publication in AIHP\u2019s journal, <em>History of Pharmacy and Pharmaceuticals<\/em>, within two years of receiving the grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its most basic level, Ms. Mang\u2019s dissertation explores the historical relationship between food and drugs. More specifically, the dissertation examines how the relationships between pharmaceutical and agricultural companies and the farming sector influence the control and management of food production and consumption. The dissertation will also analyze the ways in which the intersecting histories of farming, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural sciences led to the \u201cfood-drug nexus\u201d observed in contemporary industrial modes of food production. The dissertation examines these issues using case studies such as an animal experimental farm and research facility operated by Pfizer in Terre Haute, Indiana, as well as the early histories of the USDA\u2019s experimental farm in Beltsville, MD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. Mang will use the grant to fund archival research at the National Archives and the National Agricultural Library, both in College Park, Maryland, and the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AIHP member Professor Nancy Campbell is Ms. Mang\u2019s academic adviser and chair of her doctoral committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AIHP has awarded more than 65 PhD research support grants since 1985.
